This morning I spent a half hour interviewing Danny Sullivan about the upcoming Search Marketing Expo in Seattle on June 4 and 5. We hashed through quite a bit of material and I learned a great deal about what the goals of the conference will be, who the target audience is and why there are so many changes from his successful SES conference series.

Size of Venue & Limited Crowd

With SMX, the crowd capacity iis 550 attendees, a far cry from the throngs of thousands in attendance at SES shows in San Jose or New York, but not neither the tiny size of exclusive events like SEODays or Elite Retreat. Danny’s hoping that by limiting the crowd size, he can do a few things:

Remember that debate Jeremy and I had on disclosure? We spent nearly an hour on the phone discussing the issue - the discussion was heated, but never disrespectful, and it’s pretty entertaining, too. MP3 Here. Barry reported on the updates to Google’s Webmaster Guidelines. There’s now a lot more detail about each of the questions and issues - definitely a good thing. I invite someone to explore these, compare them against the old ones and write a great blog post (would that I had the time). Michael Gray (who we just interviewed on video) answered the eternal question - can anyone make a living blogging?I know it’s a touch tin-foil-hat, but I loved Aaron Wall’s post on Google’s Greatest Competitive Advantage, guess what, it’s not the better SERPs.Good data from Rhea on Matt Cutts’ You&A - I love the “everything you need to know in 60 seconds” format.I like Kim’s introspection on the friends we make online; it’s always fascinating to meet people in person after you’ve “met” them online a few dozen times.I’m sure it’s already been Dugg (or will be soon), but this Googlemap is hilarious.
