Digg Outranks Wikipedia? Naaaaaah, Say It Isn’t SoWriting by Nick Stamoulis on Wednesday, 2 of January , 2008 at 5:22 pm

WebPro News is reporting that Digg outranks Wikipedia for the search term “January 1 TCP/IP.” You know what that means? It may mean that inbound links from authority sites may not be worth as much as they used to. Should webmasters be concerned?

I’m not willing to say for sure just yet, but according to this video featuring Kara Ratliff, that is a possibility. Ratliff says, “Throw away everything you know about Google’s way of archiving and ranking things. The incoming authority links are basically useless.”

At Voltier Inc viral content is an essential part of our game plan.  Here is the first part or the techniques we use and the things we think about when constructing link bait and submitting to sites such as Digg.

The Ideal Article:

In order to have a successful Digg, you must submit information that is new, exciting, and very interesting.  More than anything, though, your submission must not be old news, no matter how interesting it may be.  The ideal article is one that presents 100% brand new, interesting information before anyone else.  Take for instance a recently Dugg article about Anna Nicole Smith’s death.  It immediately rose to the top of Digg…and this happened within minutes.  There were dozens of other similar stories, but the story that made it was the one that was submitted first.  When the article became old news (within a day), it was buried.

Rand’s post on low referral traffic from Digg inspired me to write about a little-known potential traffic goldmine—Digg comments.  I noticed some time ago that first post comments on front page stories can drive some remarkable traffic.  Here are two recent examples.

Last week I posted the first comment on “4 Gas Saving Myths” just before it hit the main page and linked to two relevant articles about fuel efficiency and gas prices.  This comment generated 1,438 visitors. The first comment on “Is Mythbusters The Best Science Show on the Telly?” about Mythbuster’s flawed statistics drove 1,901 visitors.  Thousands of visitors for simple comments? Here’s my guide to traffic from Digg comments.  Read carefully—go about Digg comments the wrong way and you just might get death threats—I’m not kidding, more about that later.

Recently, our SEO company Voltier Inc took on a local used car dealer in West Palm Beach, Florida, as a client. We were hired to bring customers to the dealership through referrals from the website. This is mainly done through leads generated on the website, and interest in various vehicles that are displayed on the website. In conjunction with doing various on page SEO, it has been my job to get this site indexed (as it had 0 pages indexed on all search engines when my work began). Things were progressing fairly steadily, but with only around a month of link building, I’d seen only modest results in Google and Yahoo. As many would expect, it was fairly easy to rank well in MSN for our top keywords. Our rankings for Yahoo and Google, however, for the following keywords (or some variation of), have not seen much progress;

So, apparently Digg unbanned certain domains from having stories submitted but feedback I’ve been getting and direct observations show that any stories submitted from these allegedly non-banned sites are quickly “buried”.

Connected Internet shows how the “Digg mafia” buried a story within minutes from their site. Pronet Advertising found evidence of a Digg “bury brigade”. It’s all childish nonsense and pretty much relfects the user base of Digg.
