After 5 days in China, I’m completely unqualified to give any advice on the country, tourism, travel or search marketing, but I think that despite that, it’s still worthwhile to give my early impressions. The semi-legal and illegal spread of copyright information keeps driving value toward the aggregators. Google, which already has a music search service and owns YouTube, is looking to give away licensend music to win marketshare in China.

From the WSJ
Vivendi SA’s Universal Music and about 100 other foreign and domestic record labels have been working with Top100.cn, a Beijing-based Web site that currently sells licensed music downloads for 1 yuan (about 14 cents) each, and Google. Together, Top100.cn and Google would provide free MP3 downloads with value added services, people familiar with the plans say. The new search options, for example, promise to give users free access to a database of information about their favorite artists — from concert listings to links to special ring tones.

Search Engine Strategies China was held in the beautiful resort town of Xiamen on May 24 - 25.  

KEYNOTE

Yvonne Chang, China Yahoo and Alibaba Vice President, was interviewed by Chris Sherman and Inway Ni for the Keynote address. Mr. Ni asked Ms. Chang to search for her name on Yahoo and she noted his blog was ranked #1 for that search. Ms. Chang told the audience she would speak in Chinese, a popular move considering 95% of the audience was Chinese. She said that her previous position was Vice President of Yahoo! Kimo in Taiwan. The total spent on on-line advertising accounted for only 4% of total advertising budgets, but when she left it had grown to 8%.
