Sometimes when a Google engineer decides he is pissed off at a site he or she may penalize the site in a way that the company does not rank in the top 30 results for any search query, including branded navigational queries. Imagine if you search for SeoBook and couldn’t find this site? How is that a good user experience for searchers using Google?

It is their index, so I think it is fair if Google nukes sites that they dislike for non-brand queries, but when they do it for brand related queries too, they make their search results irrelevant and provide a bad user experience. What makes the situation worse than it needs to be?

Domain Names, a Crucial Part of Your BrandWriting by Nick Stamoulis on Thursday, 13 of December , 2007 at 4:00 pm

Domain names are one of the most important parts of your brand. If you don’t think that is true, just think about the last time that you looked for a product that you were interested in last time. Did you search for it, or did you just enter the company name in the location bar and hit enter?

When it comes to computer peripherals, I have a favorite company. The company’s name is Razer and they produce a range of performance keyboards and mice. They are generally geared towards gaming and or professional applications. The trouble is that the company is remarkably difficult to find. Type in: “www.razer.com” and you will get an error page. The domain is not owned by the company. The odd thing is that Razer is a pretty big company, so you would think that they would have taken some steps to protect their brand. Razer can be found at “www.razerzone.com” which is close enough to the company name, but still not the same.

JP Morgan Chase published a research on internet companies titled Nothing But Net [PDF], hyping the future of web ad growth.

Yahoo!, a leading internet brand (a brand that means nothing) is up for grabs. The NYT, a generalist news company, is also seeing their stock tank, in spite of a market leading position in their vertical.

As large media sites open up to user generated content they are going to keep losing brand and value to niche channels owned and operated by people who are so passionate about their subject that their brands have purpose and lasting value.

When I was on my multi-month critical review of Google a few months back, I frequently highlighted how the perception of spam or quality was often associated with the brand (or lack of brand) behind the content. Stuntdubl wrote a post about brand size reviewing engineer double talk and how brand perception may control the sustainability of your site.

Many people and many sites disappear. For how long just depends on who was behind the infraction and how real their site looks and feels.

In some dirty industries there are parallel markets/messages/ideas that have similar business models, but are loved and marketed as though they are pure and do nothing but improve the world. As long as your industry is viewed as being dirty it is hard to get much traction outside of it until your industry grows up, you get good at relating your industry to other industries, and/or wrap your brand around a market that is easier to like.

It is far easier to get links as a person talking about search than it is a person talking about SEO. Google is always in the press and largely controls the public perception of SEO. Ride their publicity. It is far easier to get links as a person talking about personal finance than a person talking about payday loans. Be an expert in the broader field and then publish the offers that are profitable enough to subsidize the other content. It is far easier to get links as a person talking about blogging than a person talking about the news. There is a sense of empathy toward other bloggers, there are tons of people doing it, and social activity is baked into the software. If your field is hated consider riding other trends to help gain authority and spread your ideas. It is far easier to sell people what they want than to try to change their view of an entire industry.

VideoEgg announced $1.5 million in ad revenues over 5 months, which is not much when you consider that they have over 150 top widgets. You can use targeted widgets and gadgets to push things that are already valuable, successful, unique, or interesting outside of the social networks, but traditional advertising is no good.

Rarely will you see the relevancy line up this well unless the gadget was created custom to match the item being advertised. But gadgets need to be extensions of brands, I don’t think they can become destinations themselves. And if they do, the network can always change their policies or clone them.
