Gene Marks Is Back And Better Than EverWriting by Nick Stamoulis on Monday, 14 of January , 2008 at 7:55 am

Gene Marks wrote an article in BusinessWeek that drew the ire of every SEO and Internet marketer in the business. All you had to do was Google his name and you’d see the backlash. Even my post about him hit Page 1 on Google.

Interestingly, there’s at least one person agreeing with him and search marketer Jaan Kanellis is taking issue with that defender on yesterday’s WebProNews.

Ask.com Jumps 20%? Woo-Hoo!Writing by Nick Stamoulis on Friday, 22 of February , 2008 at 9:36 am

Marketing Pilgrim is bragging about Ask.com again.

Don’t get me wrong, I like Ask, but 20% of 3.something isn’t much. I remember when it was a big deal that Ask jumped from fifth place to fourth in search volume (last year). Apparently, they’re back in fifth and have been for some time. Even AOL, which is an aggregator, not a search engine, is ahead of them.

Much like how I shared The Best Things I Overheard at SES Chicago, I thought I’d enlighten the readers with the best, funniest, most outrageous, or downright random things said and heard at SES London:

“What dialect did he speak?”–Rand, asking about an unintelligible Brit that Scott and I had met at the bar the night before

“I don’t know, mud?”–Scott“Dave Naylor is like an idiot savant! He’s an obnoxious drunk in the evenings, but when he’s on a panel he’s a genius!”–me

Word Documents Insert Bad Code Into Blog PostsWriting by Nick on Wednesday, 11 of July , 2007 at 2:51 pm

Do you write your blog posts in Word and copy/paste into WordPress or another blogging software? You shouldn’t and I’ll tell you why.

All MicroSoft products insert superfluous code that can mess with your browser or website html. It can jack things up in a hurry.

Here’s an example of the type of code that Word can insert into your blog posts without you ever even knowing:

Want to get an edge over your competition? Everyone knows about Search Engine Optimization - search this, search that, search yackit-yak-yak. It’s all been said and done before. Or has it?

Well, there is one technique that you can use in your search campaign that you competition likely is not using. And if you are a local business marketing yourself to your local neighbors then you can gain an even bigger edge that will catapult you way over the head of your competition.

Roll up, roll up, come get your Google juice here.

The no follow tag has now been removed from the comments in this blog. This means when you make a comment, you get a little bit of Google juice right at you.

I have thermo nuclear spam protection if anyone tries to monkey around, and no putting Free credit cards and such like in the Name.

The reference to the pink links is for those who have the Search Status Firefox plugin, it shows no follow links as pink. If you don’t have it installed go get it, it does tons of other cool stuff as well.

Last week, Rand discovered that an article we’d written quite some time ago had never been launched. “How to Leverage Web 2.0 & Social Media Sites to Market Your Brand & Control Your Message” covers thirty sites that you can use for marketing. Obviously, the list is far from extensive: we went for a more general overview of what’s out there than a comprehensive guide (that’s called the Web 2.0 Awards).

As some folks had already guessed, I was the MySuperProposal guy. Tonight, I proposed to Mystery Guest on her favorite show, Veronica Mars. The video is at iFilm - the response should be up very soon (but here’s a spoiler, she said YES!)

More to come on this later, but for now, we’re going to take some time to ourselves. Feel free to leave comments, and many thanks to Joe Morin, who made this possible and Barry Schwartz, who was the inspiration for the idea.

There is an interesting debate going on at michellemacphearson.com, when I say an interesting debate what I really mean is a bunch of winging freeloaders want to acquire the intellectual of Michelle MacPheron for the price of a big mac.

Michelle has written an ebook about social media marketing and is about to publish, and has initiated a debate on pricing.

Unless you release a free or low priced ebook as part of a larger marketing strategy then it’s stupid to price low. This is not Harry Potter, it wont sell in the gazillions, probably only a few hundred people will buy. Not because it’s low quality, but because it’s a teeny tiny market in publishing terms.

SearchMe Leave Much To Be DesiredWriting by Nick Stamoulis on Saturday, 29 of March , 2008 at 12:34 pm

It seems there’s a new search engine in town. Quite frankly, they’ve got some work to do.

SearchMe is a visual search engine that let’s you scroll through screen shots of web pages based on your search query. Right now it’s in beta, which means it is totally incomplete. In fact, they’ve only got about a billion pages indexed right now. Google has that many pages indexed for some search queries. So you can see, they’ve got a long way to go.
