The First Rule of Marketing

Some people hype transparency as the only effective solution for long-term sustainable marketing success. After they are already successful they can hype such false ideals and get praised for them, which only adds to their misguided notion of marketing. The truth is everyone wants to be influenced, but nobody wants to feel like they were influenced.

A Marketing Experiment

A few weeks back a friend of mine ran a linkbait announcing the best photography blogs on the web. And then he announced on his other blog that he was trying an experiment in using flattery to build links. I commented on that post

Take The Analytics Seminar TrainingWriting by Nick Stamoulis on Saturday, 15 of March , 2008 at 6:37 am

If you’re wondering whether Google Analytics is a tool you can use for Search Engine Optimization, trust me, it is. And if you get half a chance then you should attend the Google Analytics training seminar.

Analytics is not just about tracking PPC conversions. That’s a part of it, to be sure. But analytics also allows you to track your visitors to see where they come from, where they go once they’re on your site, how long they stay, which links the click, and so on. All of this is valuable information.

Back so soon? Oh Yeah! The SMX Diaries just keep on comin’.  In Volume II, Rand interviews Neil Patel about the rise and fall of Digg and how to work around their famous hatred of SEOs and other marketers.

I recently installed the new business edition of Google’s custom search engine. It took about 5 minutes to set up and will likely pay for itself many times over. You can use it by using the search box in the right rail.

Google’s custom search engine is easy to customize, fast to implement, works across multiple domains and is cheap. It only costs $100 a year for up to 5K pages and $500 a year for 50K pages. It also allows the owner to see search frequency and your most popular queries.

Some tools exist because they are valuable and remove market friction. Others exist because they are perceived as being valuable, even if they are actually value destroying, or only valuable in rare circumstances.

Valuable Tools of the Trade

Outside of paying for a domain name, hosting, site design, and buying a few links you could create (an ad supported) business online virtually free.

Blogs are easy to post to, easy to subscribe to, and easy to comment and interact with. Keyword tools and analytics services are easy to view and infer ideas and trends from. Searchable email saves time. Google Alerts and feed readers save time and keep you connected with your industry. Many of these tools are free, in spite of offering great value.

The Google Checkout blog, currently a PageRank 8 site, recently posted about the success of GolfBalls.com on their blog. Not only does that post provide direct links, one one of the links is a deep link with targeted anchor text.

The blog post about GolfBalls.com contains the following passage:
